Not necessarily all things from Cyberpunk. Some are examples of certain features, themes or crazy awesome shit you can do. If you're like me, and do best with visual aids – these are things you can think about when tweaking characters and preparing for game.
Bladerunner Not the plot. I highly recommend muting it and just looking out at the scenery and world shown around Harrison Ford. It's a great example of a very grim cyberpunk world. Two favorite clips:
Ghost in the Shell (Movie and Series) I highly recommend this series. Both for the atmosphere and the technology, and as just a goddamn good show. Especially Laughing Man and Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig series.
For characters out of Asia (such as Iron Lotus), the atmospheric shots of both the high rises and poorer districts are excellent examples of where you grew up. You'll also see areas like this in Seattle when you travel to the International district (old China town) or the ethnic slums in Puyallup or Barrens.
The semi-police state atmosphere, the assassinations, the secret government agencies backstabbing each other, terrible escaped science project and the atmospheric shots. The agency members and particularly the Major are also good examples of currently available cybertech.
Both the concept and name for a parallel information/data world that can be experienced by those jacked into it, is straight out of Cyberpunk/Shadowrun. The movie borrowed heavily from Ghost in the Shell and SR in terms of material. Think of how the normal people in the movie access the Matrix – by jacking in - and then think of the Agents as Black ICE. That will give you a good idea of how fucking dangerous it is to deck a major corporate database. Black ICE is no joke, and there is no Neo to bail you out in SR if you goof.
Cyberpunk 2057
The glamor-80's twin of Shadowrun is a game called Cyberpunk 2057, that was very popular in Europe/Poland about the same time as SR. Besides general setting difference, magic is one of the few big differences between Shadowrun and Cyberpunk. And I borrow a lot material from Cyberpunk 2057 to enhance my Shadowrun games - so I will be getting PDF's posted of additional material/ideas you can snag from it.
Trailer from the new Cyberpunk 2077 game being set in Night City. And here's a great commentary on the trailer and the Cyberpunk world.
Resident Evil (1)
SR 1990, multinational corporations were given semi-autonomous status as nations, and legal right to have their own military/security forces. Now, throw in cybertech, VR and magic. If that doesn't spell "Horrible experiments escaping into the world" just waiting to happen, nothing will. Almost every large corps in SR is an Umbrella just waiting to happen - the only thing keeping them in check is the constant espionage and fighting between them.
Shadowrunners, more often then not, are the ones causing the lab disasters when Corporation B hires them to bust in and steal something.
Although true AI does not exist in Shadowrun, Red Queen would be Red-6 level Black ICE - something only a few corps or governments can field. Or a security program designed to lock down a lab in the event of a crisis. But without true intelligence.
